PEKIN — Pekin’s wrestling team was able to capture two of their three dual matchups this past Tuesday, Jan. 7, as the host Panthers defeated Cardinal 54-3 and Moravia 34-13. Al Chapman’s Panthers were bested by the Davis County Mustangs 51-30 in the second of their three duals.

In Matchup No. 1, against Cardinal, the two teams only competed in four contested bouts. Logan Baker defeated Gunner Zugg of Cardinal at 113 handily, capturing a pin in 45 seconds.

Pekin would go on to win the next two matches, at 120 and 138, when Gavyn Brown and Michael Jones each secured fall wins in under two minutes, respectively. The lone victory for the Comets came at 170, when Brody Adam just edged Blake Juhl in a 14-9 decision.

Against Davis County, Chapman’s club tried to make up ground late but couldn’t. Mason Juhl at 220 was the lone winner for Pekin in their first seven matches — three of which were forfeits in favor of Cardinal. It wasn’t until Jones captured his second win of the night — a pin over Adrian Gomez in a minute and 30 seconds — that the Panthers looked to be back in it.

Pekin went on to capture three of the next four matches, thanks to a pin and two forfeits, drawing the score to 39-30 in favor of Cardinal. However, Chapman’s club couldn’t make it happen at 182 and 195, losing the match 51-30.

In the final dual of the evening, Pekin competed in five contested matches. The Panthers ultimately won, but the Moravia Mohawks actually captured three of the five contested matches. Logan Baker and Blake Juhl were the only contested winners for Pekin, capturing a major decision and fall win, respectively.
