Bears’ late rally not enough in loss to Tigers

Cole Stephenson hit some big shots late in the game when the EV Bears played at Iowa Valley on February 13. He finished the game with 16 points, knocking down four triples to give the Bears a late spark. They wound up losing 59-51.

English Valleys played Iowa Valley for the third time this season, this time in a one and done scenario for the first round of postseason play on February 13. The Bears lost both meetings by a combined 10 points with the latter being a one-point loss. They almost earned that elusive win in Marengo, but their late comeback ended short in a 59-51 defeat.

The Bears played some strong defense, as they had most of the season, but their offense couldn’t find any consistency early on. A low scoring opening quarter resulted in EV trailing 13-9 with the defense forcing turnovers but the offense couldn’t find ways to cash in. The momentum swung back to the well-traveled visitors when EV used a run to put themselves ahead briefly in the middle of the second quarter.

Late in the second the zone defense implemented by the Tigers shut down some more scoring opportunities. Iowa Valley regained the lead by working the ball into the post and getting second chance opportunities with offensive boards. Even with the strong push midway through the quarter, the Tigers went into the half with a 27-20 lead.
The Tigers extended that lead with more of the same, while EV wasn’t doing themselves any favors when they had several shots refuse to fall. Turnovers by the offense gave Iowa Valley some chances to get the ball back down the floor quicker and extend their lead to double digits. A late triple closed the gap, but the Tigers still held onto a 38-28 lead.
