Bears end streak on the road

The Bears ended a 40+ game losing streak on December 3 by beating Cedar Valley Christian on the road, with their last win coming on opening night of the 2016-17 season, when they beat HLV by six on the road. It wasn’t easy to get the monkey off their back, falling behind early, but a spark in the second quarter ended up pushing the team to a 56-52 win.

The game got off to an ugly start by both teams as Cedar Valley was held to nine points and EV shot even colder, scoring only two points in the quarter. After that performance, it seemed impossible to predict an explosive second quarter, where the Bears responded with 28 points while holding Cedar Valley to 11 points, holding onto a 10-point lead going into the half.

Cedar Valley wasn’t done, outscoring EV by seven in the third quarter to cut into their deficit. The Bears bounced back again with another solid quarter to finish, beating Cedar Valley 17-16 in the fourth to secure a 56-52 win.

English Valleys faced a stiffer test the following day by hosting Keota, a team that had been putting up big points in their first week of play. They did so again on December 4, beating EV 77-35.

EV was in a hole early and was unable to climb back as the deficit kept growing as the game went on. The best offensive quarter for the Bears was the final quarter, as they outscored Keota by one point with a running clock.

The Bears looked to bounce back when they hosted Belle Plaine on December 7.
