Bears win two of three in home duals

English Valleys – Tri-County hosted three teams on November 27 to open their wrestling season, successfully beating Mid-Prairie and eking out a win over Wapello before taking a loss to EBF. It was the first time that Tri-County and English Valleys combined programs in two seasons, bringing Scott Edmundson over as well from TC to co-head coach.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to get to work with a great coaching staff and a group of student-athletes that are willing to work hard to achieve their goals,” Edmundson said. “The sky is the limit and the expectations are high. This will be a fun group for fans to support.”

EVTC v MP (45-33)

The Bears went down by nine points early but an 8-3 decision by Caleb Peach helped gain three points back. John Fisher tied things up with a pin late in the first period of his match, but MP took another double-digit lead after no contest and a takedown of Daniel Tapken. EVTC picked up 18 points due to no contest and Tanner Mihal added onto that with a pin midway through the first period of his match. A pair of no contests went to MP and one went to EVTC while Cooper Andreassen ended the dual with a pin late in the second period.

EVTC v Wapello (42-39)

Wapello picked up a quick six points due to no contest, followed by no contest for EVTC to tie it up. Ashton Moore took down his opponent in under 30 seconds to pick up six points and Fisher got his second win of the night, pinning his opponent late in the first period. Cael Hester and Peach didn’t face an opponent, gaining another dozen points for the Bears. Tapken avenged his earlier defeat by bringing down his opponent in the first 30 seconds and Mihal also successfully pinned his man in the first period. Wapello won three of the last four, with one being a minor decision to award three points, plus a no contest but they came up three points shy.

EBF v EVTC (51-30)

English Valleys ended the night on a down side as EBF closed out the dual late to blow it open. Andreassen got things going with a pin early in the second period then EBF countered with two wins of their own before Peach and Fisher combined to give EVTC the lead back. After the scored tied, due to no contest and points going to the Rockets, Tapken and Ty Moore finished off their opponents, each in under a minute’s time. At that point, the Bears led by 12 but EBF would rally and win the next four, followed by two wins due to no contest.

“Our wrestlers competed like we expected and wanted them to. I look forward to watching our wrestlers improve each week during the year,” coach Steve Hester said. “This team has a great nucleus of wrestlers who care for each other, but they still compete every day in the practice room. We have such amazing coaches and being able to have Coach Edmundson come over has been an amazing experience. I’ve always known he is a great coach and having him in the room every day solidifies that fact.”

The Bears traveled to BGM on November 29 to take on HLV, Iowa Valley and BGM followed by their first tournament of the season over in Wapello on December 1.
