BREAKING: Walker sentenced to prison

Sigourney, Iowa,- Jonathan Walker has been sentenced by Judge Shawn Showers to five years in prison. Walker was charged in March with stabbing a What Cheer man 17 times. Prosecutors had initially requested that he receive a suspended prison sentence, however they amended the initial plea deal to request that he be sent to a halfway house for six months before being released from jail. Walker's defense attorney decried the request and accused prosecutors of responding to "negative media" about the case. Judge Showers stated that he ultimately felt that Walker could be better rehabilitated by serving his sentence in prison. Walker legally can appeal his sentence, however must file notice to do so within 30 days.

The News-Review will continue to follow this case and will have a full article, including comments from the victim, in the July 25 edition of the News-Review.
