Dye, Hendricks to represent Savages at Districts

Seven teams gathered for Sectional competition on February 2, including Sigourney as the host school with hopes of advancing several wrestlers to the following weekend. Behind the back from their home fans, the Savages were able to advance Mason Dye and Trent Hendricks to Districts, one step away from making it to the State tournament.

Sigourney had one Champion on the day with Dye (113 lbs.) taking that title. In order to do so, Dye only had to wrestle one opponent and would make it to Districts regardless if he won or not. He held a slight 2-0 lead through the first period and then increased his lead by three more points before Quinten Aney (Mediapolis) brought Dye down just out of bounds and picked up a couple points. More importantly, Dye remained down for a short time but was able to get back up and finish the match. He added another three points to his lead and finished with the 8-2 win over Aney, his third Sectional title in his three years.

Hendricks (138 lbs.) was the second Savage to finish in the top two on the podium and see his season continue. After getting a bye in the first round, Hendricks matched up with Jaden Williams (Waco) and was almost taken down early with Williams taking control of one of his legs with an attempt to bring him down and pin him. It almost worked but Hendricks was able to counter with a strong reversal and ended with a pin midway through the first period. By winning that match, Hendricks found himself in the Championship match against Zach Hammes (Pekin). He fell behind 5-1 after the first period and wound up on the short end of a 16-5 decision. Despite losing the match, Hendricks ended up taking second by avoiding a wrestle-back having beat Williams earlier in the day.

Dye and Hendricks will prepare this week to take on more difficult competition on February 9 at Wilton, with a State berth on the line.
