EV Has Mixed Success in Week Four of Season

The most recent week has summed up the season the Bears have been having on the baseball diamond. They’ve shown progress from recent years and saw that with mixed success against three different teams. The Bears were shut out twice while also shutting out one of their opponents for a big win.

They started their week with a narrow loss to Sigourney, although they managed to out-hit the Savages. A couple of early base runners gave indications of scoring but a turned double play from Sigourney’s defense ended their chances. The Bears had some more chances throughout, getting guys on base, but couldn’t find ways to bring them home.

One of the things EV had changed so far this season was getting guys on base to score, whether that be taking advantage of errors, stealing bases or playing small ball. They had one of their best chances in the third inning, starting off with a sliding double off the bat of Tanner Mihal. He advanced to third after Beau Flander struck out and nearly scored off Cooper Andreassen’s single.

They bounced back in a big way when they played Keota for the second time this season. The Bears ended a shutout bid early by scoring a pair of runs and would go on to score in four of their six innings, beating the Eagles 10-0. They were led by Jacob Glandon who tallied two hits, both of which were solo home runs. Flander and Mikesell also had two hits apiece, combining for a total of four runs scored and drove in another three with Mikesell also going yard.

EV finished out the week by playing HLV at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids. It appeared they were in for a short game, after the Warriors scored seven times in the first, but their defense kept the game alive until the bottom of the seventh. The bats were silent for the Bears, generating one hit from Mihal late in the game but couldn’t do much more. HLV wound up shutting out the Bears for a 10-0 win to close out EV’s week with a 1-2 record.
