Former Tri-County wrestler earns 150th career dual victory

EDDYVILLE - What Cheer native and former Tri-County wrestling standout Brett Little earned his 150th career dual victory as head wrestling coach for Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont High School on January 13th as his Rockets recorded a 51-29 win over Wayne of Corydon.

Little is a 2000 graduate of Tri-County High School and is in his 6th season as head coach of EBF. He has been involved in the sport of wrestling for over 30 years as an athlete and coach. He wrestled in over 1,800 youth matches before competing at the high school level. Little was very successful as a wrestler at Tri-County with a career record of 118 wins and just 8 losses. He was a four-time letter winner for the Trojans and was a three- time conference champion, three -time sectional champion and also won districts his senior year. As a senior, Little advanced to the Iowa High School State Wrestling tournament in Des Moines where he placed 2nd in the state for Class 1A. He was also team captain his senior year and led the Trojan wrestling team to an impressive fourth place finish at the state duals tournament. He was named 2nd team All-State and was selected to wrestle in the North South All Star Dual Meet.

The Rockets are one of the most successful wrestling programs in the state. Little has coached the team to the 2014 Class 1A State Championship, crowning four individual champions that year and he was also named the Class 1A Coach of the Year. He has also been named District Coach of the Year twice. In his six years as head coach, the Rockets have been crowned Sectional Champions as a team four times, coming in as Runners-up last year and District Champions twice and will make a run for another sectional and district championship next month. He has coached 25 state qualifiers and 13 state place winners, including the four state champions in 2014. As an assistant coach for the Rockets, he also made history in 2012 as he helped coach the first female wrestler to ever place at the boys Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament.

Little returns three state qualifiers, including two place winners to this year’s squad and hopes to qualify even more this year.

“150 dual wins is a great accomplishment for any coach, but I have to give credit to all the great assistant coaches I have had at my side the last six years too. I am fortunate to have been surrounded by guys who are as passionate about this sport as I am,” says Little.

“Our main focus is our wrestlers and making them better men and women off and on the mat. We are ready to finish this season strong. With the toughest district tournament in the state for Class 2A, we have our work cut out for us but hope to have several state qualifiers again this year.”
