Gann gets his shot with WPU volleyball

OSKALOOSA- Alex Gann didn’t play a single set of organized volleyball during his time at Sigourney High School. However, the 2019 graduate will be suiting up for the William Penn University men’s volleyball team during their inaugural 2019-2020 season. One of 17 new recruits for first-year head coach, Luke Bentley, Gann is the only Iowan on the roster. So how did Gann end up catching the eye of Bentley, even though Sigourney does not have a boys volleyball program?

“I’ve been practicing with the Sigourney girls team for three years, and then Chris Carter (Sigourney’s head volleyball coach) emailed the new head coach and we set up a visit for me to come play to see if he wanted me to come be on the team,” Gann said.

Gann did not participate in any sports as a high schooler, but he did serve as a team manager for the girls volleyball and track teams during his time at Sigourney High. He is listed at six-feet tall on the team’s official website, but Gann says he’s still one of the shorter players on the team. He believes it doesn’t matter.
