Keokuk County residents honor those who made ultimate sacrifice

Throughout all corners of Keokuk County, thousands paid their respects on Memorial Day to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Many had come before Monday, spending time with their loved ones before making a trip to a cemetery alone, or through the several Memorial Day services held. Two of those services included at the Memorial Hall in Sigourney and at Sorden Cemetery in rural Webster.

At Memorial Hall, the American Legion Post 19 and VFW Post 2308 enlisted the talents of Rylie Shettler to sing the National Anthem, with the invocation given by Jim Stout. Members of the Heart and Hands Quilters of Quilts of Valor presented George House and Dean Richardson with hand made quilts to honor their services to their country. Students from Sigourney Elementary bravely took to the podium to share their “I Love America” essays to family and community members present before hearing from guest speaker Matt Besser about how his career in the Navy led to work at Ames Laboratory at Iowa State University. Shettler returned to the stage with her father, Steve, to sing “Battle Hymn of the Republic” before the benediction and retiring of the colors closed the ceremony.

“It means a lot to be asked to sing the National Anthem because it’s such an honor to sing it in front of our veterans who served our country and for the community,” Shettler said. “They have done so much for our country, and to be able to share this with the community is special.”
