Lady Panthers finish week on high note

The Lady Panthers got an important win to end off a week in which they struggled offensively, but got the bats going in an Invitational on June 23 hosted by Washington. Pekin lost 9-10 in a close game throughout to Central City and followed that up with a dominant 10-0 win over South Tama.

After allowing a couple early runs to Central City, Pekin countered with four runs in the top of the second inning. Central City tied the game up in the bottom of the second before Pekin retook the lead with two more runs in the third. Pekin was kept at six runs while Central City again tied up the game heading into the sixth inning.

Pekin plated a couple runs in the sixth, but Central City scored four runs to take a two run lead with one inning to go. The Lady Panthers came close, scoring one run in the seventh, but couldn’t do quite enough to force Central City to bat in the bottom of the seventh or go into extra innings. The final score was 9-10 in Central City’s favor.

While they took the loss, the Lady Panthers began to rack up runners on base and runs scored, including a great day at the plate for Remi Duwa who had four hits in four at-bats. In the previous two games earlier in the week, Pekin was held to one run while their opponents scored nine runs.

Lady Panther leaders: Remi Duwa – 4 hits, Erika Coleman/Remi Duwa – 2 runs, Remi Duwa – 1 HR, Remi Duwa – 3 RBIs, Zoey Wright/Emilee Linder – 1 SB, Faith Goudy – 2 Ks

The offense continued in their second game of the day, facing South Tama. Pekin was held scoreless for all but two of the five innings of play while shutting out South Tama from start to finish. The offense flourished in the two innings Pekin scored, five runs per inning.

The Lady Panthers put up five runs in the top of the second to take a safe lead, which they double with another five runs in the fifth. Goudy pitched all five innings, allowing a single runner via walk and struck out eight along the way.

Lady Panther leaders: Zoey Wright – 3 hits, Zoey Wright/Emi Zook/Cate Roth – 2 runs, Zoey Wright – 4 RBIs, Zoey Wright – 1 SB, Faith Goudy – 8 Ks

The Lady Panthers kicked off their final week of the regular season by hosting Lone Tree on June 25 and then traveled to Louisa-Muscatine on June 26.
