Maci, Autum selected for All State girls' basketball

Two local girls made it on a list comprising of the 2018 Iowa Sports Writers All State team. Maci Gambell of Pekin was selected on the second-team in 2A, while Autum Barthelman was selected for third-team in 2A.

With the assistance of Gambell, the Lady Panthers made it all the way to Sub-State, where they lost in overtime to Grundy Center. Pekin finished the season with a 22-3 record, including a streak of 18 wins in the middle of the season. Gambell led the team with 415 points on the season, averaging nearly 17 points per game. She also was second on the team in assists (64), steals (64), blocks (27) and rebounds (176).

“Maci was a team player for us all season. Most teams would focus on her and that would allow the other girls to get open and play better,” Lady Panthers coach Davis Eidahl said. “She wants to succeed at everything she does and be the very best. She serves as a good role model for the younger kids, and her influence will carry over to next years’ seniors.”

The Lady Savages also finished off another successful season, ending up with a 18-4 record after losing to Danville in the second-round of District play. Barthelman led the team in scoring, finishing up with 431 points, averaging just under 20 points per game. She led the Lady Savages with 108 steals and had the second-most assists (69). Barthelman also had 75 rebounds on the season, averaging just over three per game.

“I believe she really deserved this,” Lady Savages coach Zach Tremmel said. “She brought the mindset to win. We didn’t win every game, but that desire rubbed off on her teammates as well and made us better as a team.”
