Mason Dye finishes season Fifth at State Tournament

Mason Dye was the lone wrestler wearing a Sigourney singlet at the State wrestling tournament in Des Moines which began February 14 and wrapped up February 16. He came in with one goal in mind, finish atop the podium. He was on his way to achieving that accomplishment before getting derailed in the semifinal round, then bounced back to win one of his final two matches and finish in fifth.

Dye added on some pounds before this season began, moving up from the 106 lbs. weight class to the 113 lbs. weight class, which proved difficult early on. Once he got adjusted to the newer class, his dominant form returned and lasted through much of the season.

As the end of the season drew nigh, he was sidelined briefly due to injury, a rare occurrence for him up to this point in his career. After some light practice to help keep him in form, Dye returned to the mat one week later and picked up where he left off. He won his weight class at the SICL meet, followed by a Sectional title in front of his home fans and a District title in Wilton.

That title led to his second consecutive appearance at the State Wrestling tournament and he breezed through the first round against Mick Schroeder of Riverside. Dye brought down Schroeder several times leading to a 13-3 lead at the end of the first period. The match made it through half of the third period before Dye ended it with a 19-4 decision. He then faced Bryce Shaha of Mount Ayr in the quarterfinal round, having to implement a different style of wrestling with the same result.
