North Mahaska Tops EV, 5-1

IOWA CITY – North Mahaska’s baseball team made the most of its appearance at Duane Banks Stadium July 1 when they faced South Iowa Cedar League foe English Valleys. The Warhawks used strong defense and timely hits to score a 5-1 win.

The teams returned to the University of Iowa all-turf facility after two years. The two met in 2017 at the same field.

“We like to do this to give the boys a taste of playing on a major type field,” said English Valleys coach Jeremy Thomas. “Playing the JV game first allows the guys to play under the lights, something they do not get to do because we play varsity first in our league.”

North Mahaska coach Kevin Kelderman could not agree more.

“It is fun to come up here,” said Kelderman. “We get here early and the guys go out and practice sliding on the turf and they see how the ball bounces differently on our field at home.”
