Panthers dominate Savages in rival duals

The Panthers picked up most of their points via forfeits, including being awarded the first 24 points of their dual against the Savages when the two met up at Sigourney on January 21. They kept their energy flowing by winning five of the last seven matches in addition to one more forfeit to finish out with a dominant 56-12 win.

Maddie Black (106 pts.) competed in her second dual of the year, picking up her second win of season, this one coming via forfeit. Bailey Frescoln (120 lbs.), Michael Jones (126 lbs.) and Tugg Hill (132 lbs.) followed suit with forfeits from Sigourney. In the first matchup of the night, Zach Hammes (138 lbs.) squared up with Trent Hendricks in a battle of experienced wrestlers who bring high-energy to the mat. Hammes took control from the whistle, earning a 7-0 lead at the end of the first period and tacked on another eight points in the second to win the match 15-0.

Cael Baker (145 lbs.) got out to another quick start using early offense against Evan Dawson and led 7-1 midway through the first, leading to a late pin in the opening period. The Panthers picked up their fifth forfeit of the night with Cole Earnest (152 lbs.) being awarded the win for his team. Hunter Conger (160 lbs.) and Tanner Bainbridge (170 lbs.) kept the “Black Machine” rolling with wins before Sigourney got on the board.

Conger had to wrestle all three periods against Nate Schuster by slowly accumulating points each period with reversals and near-falls. After taking a 4-0 lead into the third, Conger tacked on another three points in the third to win it 7-0. Bainbridge had a battle on his hands when he took on Zeke Webb, but a couple near-falls had him up 4-0 at the end of the first and finished things off with a pin midway through the second. At that point, the Panthers had a commanding 50-0 lead and it wasn’t a question of if they would win, it was more about by how much.

The Panthers were hoping to finish out the regular season by hosting Louisa-Muscatine, Mediapolis and New London in a quad for their Senior Night. Due to the weather conditions, the quad was cancelled, with the next competition being the conference tournament that was at Highland on January 26.
