Pekin VB shows killer mentality, sweeps Sigourney

PACKWOOD — The Lady Panthers of Pekin used timely plays on both offense and defense to thwart any and all Sigourney comeback attempts in a decisive straight-sets victory last Tuesday night. Sara Lane’s club continuously found the soft spots within the Lady Savages’ defense, notching set wins of 25-21, 26-24, and 25-8 to outlast Sigourney. Lane was ecstatic with the effort.

“I was really proud of them,” Lane said. “That was something we set down for our goals for the season — to have that ability to sense when the other team is going through a rough patch.”

Pekin smelled blood in the water in their close out set No. 3, holding advantages of 11-2, 15-3, and ultimately, 25-8. Chris Carter’s squad had just battled back time and time again in set No. 2, coming from behind to tie the score at 9, 20, and 23, before a communicational lapse on serve receive led to the final Pekin point dropping in in front of Sigourney’s back line. It was clear that the second set had taken a lot out of the Lady Savages.
