S-K falls short in bid for perfect season

SIGOURNEY — Heading into Friday’s matchup with Mediapolis, the Sigourney-Keota Cobras had dismantled nearly every opponent they had lined up against during the 2019 season. Even with an unblemished 8-0 record, head coach Jared Jensen and his players knew there was an outside chance that if they suffered a loss Friday night, their season could be over due to their strength of schedule — or lack thereof. The worst possible outcome unfolded at Cobra Field, with the Bulldogs of Mediapolis coming away with a 28-6 win — and the Class 1A District 5 title.

The early part of the first half was a defensive battle. Neither team put points on the board in the first quarter — even when drives were extended by penalties. The second quarter is one the Cobras, and their 16 seniors, will surely wish they could replay.

When the second quarter started, the Bulldogs were in the midst of a drive that was moving into S-K territory. After a holding penalty, a 2-yard-loss, an incomplete pass, and a 3-yard gain brought up 4th-and-19, one play swung the momentum of the entire half — and possibly the game.
