Savages needing more tune-up before Conference tournament

Sigourney was in for a test when they hosted Pekin for their annual duals on January 21 with Pekin gaining momentum as of late and the Savages having to wrestle without Mason Dye, one of their leaders and best wrestlers. The Savages gave up some points early due to forfeits and won two of the last three matches en route to a 56-12 loss.

Trent Hendricks (138 lbs.) got things started for Sigourney but was down a bunch early and couldn’t muster enough to make a comeback. After going down 7-0 at the end of the first, another eight points by his opponent, Zach Hammes, would end the match late in the second. Evan Dawson (145 lbs.) had a similar fate against Cael Baker, one of the Panther’s top wrestlers, trailing 7-1 at the end of the first, then was pinned early in the second. Another forfeit put Pekin up 41-0 with five matches remaining.

Up next for the Savages was Nate Schuster (160 lbs.) who hung around the whole duration of the match but was held scoreless in a 7-0 loss. Zeke Webb (170 lbs.) was down 4-0 through the first period of his match and fell behind another three points in the second before getting pinned. Things turned around and gave the Savages crowd something to cheer about when Mac Conrad (182 lbs.) took to the mat for his final regular-season dual as a Savage.

Conrad had some initial struggles against Logan Kealey, but a couple moves on offense had Conrad in control, leading to a pin midway through the first period and ending the shutout. Sigourney sent Cade Streigle (195 lbs.) to keep the late charge going but he was unable to do so with Mason Juhl pulling off a hard takedown to pin him.

The Savages had the rest of the week to tune-up for the SICL meet on January 26 at Tri-County and are expecting Mason Dye to be back in action.
