Savages track picks up points from field, long-distance events

The Sigourney boys’ track team finished with a fourth-place finish at the Ruritan Relays down at Pekin High on March 28. Several of the points earned came from their finishes in the various field events, including a first-place finish in the high jump.
Spencer Magill was the lone Savage to give his team 10 points on the day, as he cleared the high jump bar at 5’-6.00”. Sigourney saw some success in the shot put and discus, having at least one boy finish top-five in each event. Mac Conrad put together a 38’-5.00” throw in the shot put to take second and Hunter Schwab finished third in discus with a 108’-10” toss.

The trio of Magill, Conrad and Schwab earned 24 points for the Savages with their placements. Kyle Weber picked up another point with a sixth-place result (15’-4.00”) in the long jump and Colton Schwab contributed a couple points with his 4’-10.00” clearance of the high jump bar.

Another strength the Savages will be leaning on early is their long-distance runners. Paul Montgomery finished third in the 800m run (2:20.05) while Trace Bell took fifth in the event with a time of 2:44.47. Mason Moore finished in the bronze position in both the mile and two miles races with times of 5:13.40 and 11:05.57 respectively. The long-distance runner group totaled 20 points for the Savages, just over a quarter of the teams’ total points.

Other results are as follows:

100-meter dash: Rassir Higgenbotham took fourth (12.15), Sebastian Arduser finished ninth (13.07)

200-meter dash: Colton Schwab finished eighth (26.35)

400-meter hurdles: Tristan Bell finished third (1:05.26)

4x200-meter relay: Sigourney finished third (1:44.34)

Distance Medley: Sigourney finished third (4:31.00)

Long Jump: Sebastian Arduser finished 10th (25’-8.00”)

Discus: Rassir Higgenbotham finished seventh (91’-0.00”)

The Savages totaled 77 points, most of which came from the field and long-distance events. They finished four points behind English Valleys, who took home third place.

Long-distance continued to help support the team when Sigourney made the trip up to Belle Plaine for their second meet in as many days, and many of the familiar names found themselves back near the top.

Montgomery put together another top-five finish in the 800-meter run, finishing up with a time of 2:20.41. For most of the race he remained with the front pack and as the meters dwindled, the gap grew. A final kick allowed Montgomery to pass a couple opponents but he was unable to quite close the gap on the leader. A similar storyline occurred within the 1600m run, which featured Tommy Stout and Moore. Stout held tight with the leaders but came up just shy in the final half lap, but still managed to finish strong in the straightaway. Stout finished third in the 1600 with a time of 5:04.70, while Moore took sixth with a time of 5:19.46.

Some of the same names also competed in the 4x800-meter relay, which resulted in a second-place finish, clocking in with 9:17.25. The Savages had another big finish in the 4x200-meter relay as they wound up taking fourth place with a time of 1:41.77.

In the field events Magill and Hunter shone again in their respective events. Magill finished third in the high jump, clearing 5’-4.00” and Hunter finished fourth in the discus with a toss of 114’-9.00”.

400-meter run: Trace Bell finished seventh (1:04.90)

800-meter Sprint Medley: Sigourney finished seventh (1:52.19)

Sprint Medley: Sigourney finished eighth (4:44.03)
