Schultz Announces Capitol Project 2014 Participants
Des Moines - The Iowa Secretary of State’s office is once again sponsoring Capitol Project, a four day interactive educational program for Iowa sophomores and juniors interested in government and the democratic process. Capitol Project is a stepping-stone for future leaders – allowing students to experience government in action and providing lessons in goal setting, teamwork and leadership. The 2014 session will take place from February 17-20. Students from across the state were encouraged to apply, and 20 students are chosen to participate.
Students spend four days at the capitol where they meet with statewide elected officials, legislators, pages and lobbyists. They work in small groups with bill drafters and policy analysts as they imitate the legislative process from brain storming their legislative ideas to its passage or veto. When not working on their legislative bills, students have the opportunity to observe the gavel-in process and the floor action in both chambers, as well as tour the capitol and have dinner with Governor Branstad and Lt. Governor Reynolds at Terrace Hill.
“Capitol Project is a unique opportunity for students across the state to get a hands-on view of how the Iowa legislative process works. I look forward to meeting this year’s participants and to having discussions with them regarding their legislative ideas,” said Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz.
