Sigourney Elementary students enjoy fun day

Innovative activities + community support + a sunny afternoon = a fun day for 300 kids. That is a workable formula for Sigourney Elementary principal Deanna Hutchings, her staff and her students. That formula played out as the school celebrated its fun day Friday afternoon.

“If kids are having fun at school, they will want to be here and want to learn,” said Hutchings as she directed the activities under the sunlit skies of Keokuk County.

Clouds and rain had been the norm throughout the week, but by noon on Friday, the skies cleared and the kids and staff were ready for the fun. Students began the afternoon breaking into song and dance on the playground led by Kimi Jo Hernandez as DJ before embarking on a 1.5-mile trek and obstacle course.

The first encounter was climbing over hay bales and ended with a hop, skip and jump over small hurdles before entering the play-ground again.
