Sigourney Fire Department busy in past weeks

It has been a busy past couple of weeks for the Sigourney Fire Department. On Tuesday, Nov. 26, Sigourney Fire Department responded to two separate fire calls within a matter of hours.

Around 11 a.m., a call for service came into the Keokuk County 911 center in reference to a grain bin fire at a farm property owned by Mike Haines, on Highway 92.

According to Sigourney Fire Chief Bill Halleran, the fire was beneath a grain bin drier. Halleran said that the department had to vacuum the corn out from the bin to get to the fire. It was estimated that four to six thousand bushels of corn were in the bin at the time of the fire. Sigourney Fire was on the scene for approximately three hours.

“It was crazy windy and cold,” Halleran said of the scene.

Keswick Fire was initially paged out to respond to the call, however, Halleran advised that Keswick was eventually told they could disregard, after Sigourney Fire began to get the scene under control. No injuries were reported in the fire.
