Sigourney history students head to districts

The Sigourney Community School District held two history fairs for their schools, with the elementary history fair held on February 28. Each student presented their projects-ranging from poster boards to digital presentations to short skits-in front of younger grades and then were judged that afternoon to choose who would go on to the district competition on April 7.

According to Amy Jones, the history teacher for the elementary school, the theme was “Taking a Stand in History”, which was used by other students across the country. Students could choose any topic related to the theme. Along with the project itself, each had to write a process paper about how they created their work. They could also work alone or with a partner for the project.

“I was happy to see students choosing such a wide variety of topics,” Jones said. “They worked hard doing research and completing their projects.”

The same theme and process applied to the high school students as well, who will compete in the senior division. Their history teacher, Andy Harter, informed students of the contest in October, but work mainly began after winter break was over. 14 students prepared their own exhibits, plays and documentaries that will advance to districts.

“Our topics are all over the map,” Harter said. “One thing I say is you don’t want to do anything that someone else is doing. There’s presentation ranging from Bill Russell to Rosa Parks. We’ve done well at districts in the past and they have done a lot of research to do well.”
