SK bowling rolls through Ottumwa

The SK bowling team rolled through Ottumwa on January 10 in one of their longest stretches of the season, consisting of three meets in as many days. With the Bulldogs sporting more depth and SK in the middle of an up and down season, SK wound up losing but gained more experience for down the stretch.

The competition was split up into three different groups with one group consisting of Alex Dobbins, Claire Svenby and Jackson Droz. The trio came just short of winning their first game and bounced back to dominate the second game despite facing two opponents. Dobbins rolled an 84 in his first game and then ended his second game by throwing four strikes in the final six frames to finish with a 132. Droz improved slightly from an 86 in his first game to roll a 95 in his second game and Svenby led the way with a 129 and 134 in her two games. They lost the first game 303-299 but won the second 361-270.

Bakers scores: 90, 137, 137, 116, 93

The boys’ and girls’ teams faced an uphill battle against their varsity opponents with the boys and girls putting up a fight but didn’t succeed. The boys team consisted of Maltese Thomas, Dominic Bensmiller, Joel Goldman, Devin Fry, Nathan Morris and Holden Huffman. They combined for team scores of 731 and 786 while Ottumwa scored 929 and 932. Thomas rolled a 117 and 107, Bensmiller rolled a 81 and 83, Goldman rolled an 85 and a 94 (put up two strikes in the final frame) and Fry started out strong with a 179 followed by a 148. Morris and Huffman, two of the more veteran boys on the squad rolled a 123 and 191 and a 146 and 163 respectively.

Bakers scores: 180-135 (loss), 155-105 (loss), 161-148 (win), 201-164 (loss), 192-144 (loss)

“Every time we go to a bigger school that isn’t in our class and are more experienced, I always tell them to observe how the other team bowls and try to improve themselves,” SK coach Trisha Black said. “A lot of the bigger schools carry themselves well and they move on from the mistakes they make. That’s something I’m trying to instill in our program, to move onto the next one because you can’t change what happened in the last frame.”

The girls’ team consisted of Samantha Bombei, Kilie Norton, Dana O’neill, Madi Richard, Hope de Regnier and Hannah Alderson. Bombei rolled a 120 followed by a 122 (three strikes in the final four frames), Norton rolled an 80 followed by a 73, O’neill rolled a pair of 84’s, Richard rolled a 93 and a 96, de Regnier rolled a 96 and improved to a 109 and Alderson started with a 180 and improved to a 209 (scoring three strikes in the final two frames). The team scored 653 in the first game, compared to Ottumwa’s 1031 and scored a 696 in the second game while the Bulldogs scored 1006.

“Hannah did tremendous during this meet. She listened and moved when she needed to, hit her mark and bowled well. Devin Fry was the same way with the adjustments he made throughout and changed some things during their Bakers games,” Black said. “I tell them they need to focus on what they’re doing and not what the other bowlers are doing. We have a newer team this season compared to where we were last season and hopefully within the next few weeks we can continue to improve.”

Bakers scores: 148-96 (loss), 210-96 (loss), 169-156 (loss), 161-126 (win), 158-118 (loss)

The SK bowling squad finished out their week by bowling at Oskaloosa on January 11 followed by a home meet for Senior Day on January 12 when they faced Davis County and Centerville.
