Small business workshop educates area owners

Sigourney residents got down to business to further their own unique business through a workshop put together by Indian Hills Community College, Pathfinders, and the Sigourney Development Corporation (SADC).

Business owners attended one of two sessions on Wednesday, Oct. 11, one session being for brand new owners and the other for established small business. Though participation was low, this allowed Bryan Ziegler, Director of Small Business Development at Indian Hills, to work one-on-one with attendees.

“Small businesses provide 60 percent of the jobs and services in a small community,” Ziegler said. “My goal is to get small businesses to think how they can get sales outside their local trade area in addition to local sells.”

Through his first session, Ziegler promoted business planning for the new owners, instructing how to start the process and also promoting the use of Quickbooks to keep finances on track. With the second session, business owners discussed marketing issues, writing content for promotions, and customer service.
