Stuhr wraps up sophomore season at State meet

Megan Stuhr has proved some versatility this year, having run in some track events early on and occasionally throughout the season, but more so focusing on competing in the field. She was able to improve her discus from her freshman season enough to make it to the State meet this year.

Last season, Stuhr recorded a best throw just over 93’ in the discus, then the hard work began. She didn’t have much time to rest with softball season starting up only a couple weeks later with intense practices and many games in the span of the summer months. Like many of her friends and teammates, the ability to play in multiple sports helped Stuhr as she prepped for her next sport.

“Megan is special because whatever she sets as a goal, she is going to do whatever it takes to achieve it,” Sigourney coach Andy Harter said.

After softball came cross country which helped build endurance and keep in shape, which led to basketball and combined endurance with speed and strength. All that time in the offseason kept Stuhr mentally and physically sharp, which really showed in her drastic improvements during the 2018 track season.

“At the beginning of the season she couldn’t get a lot of throws in because of the weather so she spent a lot of time working on technique and throwing rubber discusses against the wall. When we could finally get outside, it took a her a little while to break 100 feet,” Harter said. “Once she did that, there was no looking back and she kept improving and improving.”

As the weather got nicer, so did the throws Stuhr was able to accomplish, both in competition and in practice. When the weather wasn’t as conducive for her improving her throwing skills, she worked on improving herself in running events and found herself running in some throughout the season when asked.

“She’s a unique thrower who also ran anything we needed her to from 100s to 800s without complaint,” Harter said.

Stuhr was able to achieve a new seasonal PR at the Waco District track meet, her best throw measuring at 110’-9.00”. That distance was the second best thrown at those Districts and qualified her to make the State track meet in Des Moines.

She was given one week to try and prepare for the competition she would face at State, going up against the best 1A girls. While she had finished in the top five multiple times in the season, this was going to be different.

“I know she wanted to make finals, but she has no reason to be disappointed because she had three throws right around her average,” Harter said. “She will be back next year I have no doubt, and she has her sights set on the school record, which is possible.”

Stuhr wound up taking 15th place, fourth in the first flight, with a best throw of 107’-11”. While she didn’t make the finals, she did gain some valuable experience and the sense of accomplishment to make it to State in only her second year. She will be one of few returning with State experience to lead the Lady Savages and improve upon her personal best.”
