Tri-County sends three to Health Academy

Indian Hills Community College Rural Health Education Partnership and the Ottumwa Regional Legacy Foundation a Health Careers Exploration Academy is wrapping up and three local Tri-County students were 3 of the 32 chosen to participate. After an essay and referral process, Nikayla Dowd, Katlyn Little and Zoe Ogden were chosen to take part in this program for upcoming junior and senior high school students. Participants of the Academy spent from July 28 – August 1 staying on the IHCC campus in the dormitories and then returned for additional days of August 3 and August 10 where they traveled to two different hospitals and will complete two more evenings during the school year. Activities consisted of an overview of various health professions including hands-on experiences with medical procedures and equipment, healthcare professional guest speakers, job shadow experience, exploration of financial options such as scholarships, grants and loans. Participants also were able to participate in lab procedures when they participated in field trips to area Universities and medical schools.

Nikayla Dowd states, “Before going to the academy I had not fully decided on the career path that I was wanting to take. I chose to apply for this program because I knew that hands on activities would give me the most exposure to the field. Now that the program is complete, I am positive that I want to join the radiology technician program and then also study sonograms. The program also helped with a lot of beneficial information about scholarships and grants that are available for students. I know there are a lot of scholarships I will be applying for. I also met a lot of nice kids from the area that are looking into the same career and we shared a lot of fun memories and stories. I would recommend applying for this program to any high school student that is debating on the health field.”

This program was offered at no cost to participants. It also included meals and fun activities for the participants. Students will earn 3 semester hours of college credit and will become eligible for a health career scholarship to assist them with their college tuition costs.
