Albert Leroy Leer, was born July 9th 1961 in What Cheer, IA to Albert James and Dolores (Dugger) Leer. He grew up in Keokuk County for a majority of his life, but also lived in Hawaii during the winters. Leroy graduated with the Tri-County class of 1979, then went on to continue his education at Lincoln Tech in Des Moines. Leroy married his wife Amy (Grimm) Leer on October 20th 2007 at Lake Iowa. In July of 2008 he adopted his daughter Cassidy (Leer) Martin. They lived on the Dugger family farm North of What Cheer. Leroy had various jobs over the years including driving his Kenworth Truck across the country for 15 years, he was most known for his work for the family drainage business of Leer Tiling and Construction Inc. out of Keswick.

Anyone who crossed paths with Leroy soon became a friend. He had a soft spot in his heart for animals and kids. He never wanted to see an animal suffer, and always had a special bond with his pets. One of Leroy’s passions in life was his love for firearms and his family. In 2014 when at a rodeo event for his daughter he opened his mouth and became the director for the Iowa High School Rodeo Assn. shooting sports. He later became the national director for the shooting sports for the National High School Rodeo Assn. for 7 years. He touched many lives doing these events and left a lasting impression on many of the individuals and families associated with the NHSRA.

In December of 2022 Leroy became the proud grandfather of Oliver Martin. He always said he couldn’t wait for him to grow up and they could cause all kinds of trouble together like he did with his nieces and nephews. Though that chance never came, he still was able to spend time with Oliver and watch him grow.

Leroy was called home on Thursday June 22nd 2023 at the University of Iowa Hospital after a long battle with various illnesses. Leroy is survived by his wife Amy Leer of What Cheer, daughter Cassidy (Adam) Martin of What Cheer, Grandson Oliver Martin of What Cheer, Father Albert James (Jim) Leer of Keswick, Sisters Deb Hart of Cheyenne, Wy, Nita (Phillip) Brumbaugh of Keswick, Nieces and Nephews Daniel (Alina), Colt (Samantha), Andrea, Kacy (Tony), Mikayla (Jessica), Jake (Lexie) and Dustin.
