SIGOURNEY – Approximately thirty firefighters were faced with single digit temperatures and 8-10 mph winds from the north as they arrived on the scene of a fully engulfed large barn fire south of Sigourney on 200th Avenue. At about 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 10, fire companies from Sigourney, Keota and Hedrick braved the frigid weather and answered the call.

Sigourney Fire Chief Bill Halleran expressed his thanks to the Sigourney Community School District for the use of a heated school bus that was brought to the scene allowing firefighters to warm up in shifts as the battle progressed.

The neighbor to the north, Will Moore, provided support by bringing his skid loader. Casey Thompson also arrived on location with his skid loader equipped with a grapple hook to help in the effort.

Despite the valiant efforts of the firefighters and other volunteers, the barn and its contents, which included vehicles and farm implements, were a total loss. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was not immediately apparent and is still under investigation.
