Cobra Football season retrospective

While this season didn’t finish with a State Championship, the pride and enthusiasm brought to fans of the Sigourney-Keota Cobras had things to cheer about all season long.

Seniors Brady Duwa, Bryce Greiner, Brayden Moffit, Carson Sprouse, Josh Mohr, Sam Sieren and Wyatt Sieren improved on the 8-1 2019 record by finishing the 2020 campaign 10-1, District 1A-6 Champions and
State Semifinalists.

The 2020 Cobras opened their season at No. 12 in Class 2A Mid-Prairie in Wellman. The Cobras held the Golden Hawks to a 27-7 lead late in the third quarter until Mid-Prairie started a small comeback. The Golden Hawks marched it down the field, but Brady Duwa had an interception of a Mid-Prairie pass with 14.4 seconds left to seal the Cobra victory.

Game two of the season was originally scheduled against Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, but due to some COVID-19 cases, Union Community took the place of the Rockets. The Knights came to Cobra Field for Senior Night. The Cobra dominated, racking up 385 rushing yards and winning 48-14.

The following game was played at Louisa-Muscatine, a 41-0 victory for the sons of Sigourney-Keota. After shutting out the Falcons, Homecoming was looming on the horizon for the Cobras. Their opponent would be the Van Buren County Warriors at halftime (as well as the end of the third quarter) the Cobras were up 48-0. However, the Warriors would score twice in the final quarter to make the score 48-13. Notably, of the seven warrior passes that were attempted, none found a Warrior receiver.

The Backyard Brawl was pushed back from the beginning of the season and even though this was the case, both Cobras and Panthers, fans and players supported their respective teams very well. The Cobras 49-0 victory was their first shutout in the series since a 7-0 win in 1977. Also, the 49 point margin was the largest in series history. Next up, the Cobras tangled with the Bulldogs of Mediapolis, the school that took them out of playoff contention the year prior. The Cobras enacted revenge, by scoring at least a touchdown every quarter en route to a 31-14 victory.

Next up, the Cobras played the first of two games against the Cardinal Comets. The final regular season game was a 68-8 victory for the Cobras which led them to a Class 1A District Six title. The Cobras had 630 yards of total offense in this game, 461 yards on the ground and 169 yards through the air. Notably, 80 yards of those 169 came on a Sam Sieren to Brady Duwa touchdown.

The following Comet-Cobra game was for the Second Round of the playoffs, this time the Cobras won 49-0 and Sieren had five touchdown rushes on 17 attempts.

The Cobras then played the Beckman Catholic Trailblazers which featured another outstanding game by Sam Sieren, who had four touch-
downs on the night, which led to a 35-14 final score. The Third Round game, against Columbus Catholic, was an extremely down to the wire game, with the Cobras being up 21-19 at half and pulling out the victory 35-32 after a late score by the Sailors.

Coach Jensen has the following thoughts about the legacy left by the Cobra Class of 2021:
“A phenomenal group of kids, we only have seven seniors. From their eighth grade year, they’ve been com-
ing in and lifting with the team in the morning. The Keota boys are driving from Keota over to Sigourney, then after lifting driving back
over to school in Keota. The commitment level from those guys was led from Luke Greiner’s class. I think
they can see dedication pays off. We came up a little short today, but we got a good future ahead of us.”
