This game featured intermittent heavy rain, featureless as well as ominous fog and points galore for English Valleys in my first ever experience of eight-man football on Friday, Sept. 11 at Tri-County High School.

With 3:19 left in the opening quarter, Beau Flander had a 34-yard rush for a touchdown. Due to the abysmal field conditions, the Bears went for their first of seven two-point conversions, a successful pass from Cole Stephenson to Kaden Hall made the score 8-0.

“Half of our practices were in the rain which helped us prepare for tonight, Coach Gerard said.

Flander found the end zone again just a short while later, with 10:04 left in the second quarter, but the conversion failed, and English Valleys had a score line of 14-0.

On the ensuing kickoff, Tri-County muffed the ball and English Valleys took over on the Trojan 20. Stephenson passed to Kaden Halls and in one play the Bears went up 22-0 as their conversion was successful.

Stephenson and co. moved down the field again and burst the Trojan defense asunder, completing a one-yard pass to Kaden Kubas to go up 28-0.

Flander didn’t flounder in his final first half footrace, this time from 14 yards out to go up 34-0. The two-point conversion was successful and the Bears went into half up 36-0.

Flander had two more flights for points in the second half, once from zero yards out and the other from four yards out to put English Valleys up 50-0 going into the final stanza.

“When you have the weapons we have, it makes it easier to score,” Coach Gerard said.

With five minutes to go, Josh Osborn went in for Cole Stephenson and completed a 36-yard touchdown pass, to put the final touchdown on the board for the Bears as they won by 58.

“It’s not that different from 11-man ball, it’s faster, they play hard and it’s a great way for us smaller schools to still compete. If you’ve never seen an eight-man game played on an eight-man field, that’s something that is different. People need to come out and see it,” Coach Gerard said about what makes eight-man ball special.

Both teams were marred by penalties: seven for 65 yards for the Bears and eight for 75 yards for the Trojans.

English Valleys finished with 272 yards of total offense (111 passing, 161 rushing) on 13:39 time of possession.

Tri-County had 100 yards of total offense (98 yards rushing and two yards passing) on 34:21 time of possession.
