Gary Hoover

Gary Hoover

1957-2020

Gary Dean Phillips Hoover was born Jan. 27, 1957 in Fairfield. He was welcomed into the Rev. Roy and Rowena Hoover family when he was adopted at the age of 7 1/2. He was overwhelmed when he realized we paid money to be able to keep him with us because he had been in several foster homes and was afraid he would be moved again. This act of wanting to keep him enough to pay helped him understand what Jesus did for us when he took all our sins to the cross and paid His own blood to bring us into His heavenly family. Accepting Jesus’ sacrificial payment for us means we are saved but doesn’t instantly change all our behavior and thoughts. It definitely should be the beginning of a determination to learn God’s ways and thinking in order to improve our behavior over the years. Gary began a variety of jobs while in high school when he began helping local farmers in the Keswick area. Later he drove a mail truck from Des Moines to Keswick, worked in a couple of factories, and drove semi tractor-trailer for a couple of different companies. His favorite pastime was hanging out with his dad. They played golf and remodeled several homes together. Eventually, Gary gained a preaching license so served at the Friends’ Church of Indianola, Iowa and then a small church in Grinnell. He had recently taken early retirement from his most recent job of driving for the Bisom Company out of Newton, to spend more time remodeling the house he purchased a year earlier in Monroe.

He passed away at the age of 63 on Thursday evening, Nov. 19 at Methodist Hospital of Des Moines, after losing a struggle with Covid. Gary is survived by three children and one grandchild: Ariel and Alex McNeal of Mascoutah, Ill; Aaron Hoover of Des Moines; and Amber and Tim Brown of Des Moines and their daughter, Emberly. His Mother: Rowena Hoover of Pella. His sister and brother-in-law: Celia (Hoover, Shaull) and Ken Stouwie of Pella, and a whole lot of friends that joined him at golf, target shooting and Bible study. He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Hoover; a sister, Carolyn (Hoover) Travaille; a brother, Paul Hoover; Grandparents Frank and Eleene Hoover and Grandparents James and Evadne Beebe.

A memorial service will be posted online in the near future. Interment will be in the Hoover family plot of Thompson Cemetery near Bonaparte, Iowa next spring.
