Keota senior Sawyer Stout wrapped up his final season in a Keota basketball jersey with a selection to the Sub-State 6 All-Sub-State Team.

Stout spoke on receiving his season honors that included an unanimous selection to the SICL First Team All-Conference Team, as well as the All-Sub-State selection, with, “When the season is going, you don’t really think about them. It is nice after the season to get recognized for how good you were playing. The awards mean a lot to a lot of people.”

Stout finished with the seventh most field goals made (203) and 12th in total points (501) in all of Class 1A. He also finished with the most field goals made in the South Iowa Cedar League conference, as well as finishing in second in total points. In the SICL-East division, he finished in the top five of seven of the 17 total statistics: first in points, first in field goals made, third in free throws made (47), third in free throw percentage (71.2%), fourth in field goal percentage (50.9%), fourth in three pointers (48) and fourth in effective free throw percentage.

“I gave this sport everything that I had, that was the amount of work that I put in. I put up at least 100 shots a day here (the Keota gymnasium). Billie Kindred and I were here at 7 am putting up shots, even throughout the football season. It was a balance of working on basketball, while also having my main focus on the football season. You end up using a lot of your day on those two things. To get good at basketball, you have to put the time and effort in,” explain Stout on the work that led to his successful season.

The Eagles were led by a group of seniors that have an immense amount of chemistry between them. Stout spoke on this chemistry with, “We have all been playing since fourth grade. With this small of a school, you have to have the guys out there, and you are playing so much together. We have been playing basketball with each other since our sophomore year, so if you are a three year experience team you can out-run most teams. It’s the same with golf, we are all playing the same sport. We have been pretty successful in each thing we have been playing in.”

Stout wrapped up his final season as an Eagle not only with a unanimous All-Conference selection and All-Sub-State honors, the Eagle secured sole possession of a SICL Conference Title.
