CORALVILLE – Both wrestlers were more than ready to show their fight.
At the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union State wrestling tournament this week Sigourney-Keota wrestlers Kia Montgomery and Karley Greiner were able to get their first taste of the State tournament.
Montgomery wrestled in the 125-pound bracket of class 1A. In the first round Montgomery, who was the 16th seeded wrestler, faced off against undefeated Molly Allen of Riverside. Allen made short work of the match, winning by a tech fall (20-3) late in the first period.
That didn’t bother Montgomery much as she moved into the consolation semifinals where she took on a wrestler from Central Lyon- George Little Rock.
Montgomery was able to start the match with an immediate three point take down. She then had back-to-back four point near falls. Her opponent would score an escape and a three point takedown at the end of the first period.
Montgomery had the 11-5 lead, but quickly recorded another early takedown in the start of the second period.
Points would become meaningless a few seconds later when Montgomery was able to pin her opponent for her first State tournament win in her career.
In the second round of the consolation bracket Montgomery took on Ava Streeter of Durant. The two wrestlers battled well into the second period before Streeter was able to pin Montgomery, ending the juniors season.
She finishes the year with a 34-24 overall record.
Greiner wrestled in the 155-pound bracket. Like Montgomery Greiner was making her first appearance at the State tournament.
The freshman entered as the 16th seed and ended up drawing Earlam’s Haley Glade (the top seeded wrestler for the tournament) in the first round.
Greiner was pinned in 56 seconds, sending her to the consolation bracket.
In the consolation first round Greiner battled Kasee Huss of MOC-Floyd Valley. Greiner started off that match with an early takedown for three points.
Her opponent was able to escape the hold and then take Greiner down. Just at the end of the first period Greiner was pinned, ending her season.
The freshman finished the year 17-11 overall.
