NEW SHARON – North Mahaska made a clean sweep of BGM Tuesday night with the No. 13 NM girls winning 63-19 and the boys topping the Bears 62-34. It was the second game in as many days for North Mahaska, which will play four games in five days.

It looked like North Mahaska would put up big numbers jumping out to a 28-3 lead after one period. The host Warhawks took advantage of BGM turnovers early. With four games this week, NM coach L.E. Moore was able to use his meager bench to rest players.

“We were able to get some other players in and rest a bit,” said Moore. “We played much better tonight than we did last night. It was good those girls got minutes on the floor as we have a busy week and I think we were tired from last night.”

Moore was referring to his team’s last second loss to another South Iowa Cedar League team Sigourney.

Layla Hargis did not have a great shooting night but finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds including nine on the offensive end. Addie Schilling had a solid floor game with 16 points, five assists and three steals. Maddie McKay hit for eight point and was credited with four steals. Kaitlyn VanDonselaar had six points and five rebounds, and Breanna Fogle scores five points with 11 rebounds.

Deana Evans led BGM with seven points and Alexa Coleman hit for five.

North Mahaska is scheduled to host Tri-County Thursday and English Valleys on Friday, weather permitting. They close out the regular season on Monday when they host Class 2A Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.

Another Third Period Run Lifts NM Boys

North Mahaska again used a big third quarter run to score a South Iowa Cedar League basketball win. The Warhawks broke open a 33-22 game at halftime with an 18-3 run to post a 62-64 victory over BGM.

BGM held with the Warhawks in the opening period but was outscored by seven in the second quarter. Coming out of the locker room NM limited the Bears to a free throw and a single bucket to take full control of the game.

North Mahaska was able to force 25 turnovers and collected 18 steals, many of which resulted in points. Lane Harmon recorded six of the thefts and Braden Steel had four. Steel led the NM scoring with 15 points. Addy Bollman finished with 13 and Nash Smith had 10. Dylan Klinker and Ethan Huffman each had six points.

BGM was led in scoring by Trase Kriegel with 13 points and also had 13 rebounds. Joe Kasal had 11 points and Jacob Moel scored 10.

North Mahaska improved to 13-3. They are scheduled to host Tri-County Thursday and English Valleys on Friday. BGM falls to 2-16 overall.
