SIGOURNEY—On her grandfather’s birthday, May 26, Carly Goodwin gave the best gift he could’ve asked for: a perfect game. Goodwin guided the Savages past the English Valleys Bears with a 17 strikeout performance en route to the 9-0 victory.

Of the 21 total English Valley batters on the day, she struck out 17 of them, which is an astounding 81% of the Bears’ batters that fell to her at the plate.

After the stellar performance, Goodwin reflected on it with, “It feels good.” She went on to describe the work she has put in the offseason to get to this point with, “I’ve been working a lot on my mechanics trying to perfect everything, and I think my rise ball has come a long way, especially this year. Different things to keep the hitters off balance.”

She went on to describe the relief that came with making her commitment to play for the University of North Iowa at the next level, and how that relief of pressure has allowed her to, “Just do my thing.”

17 was not a career high for strikeouts in a game for Goodwin, that mark is at 19. She has every intention of breaking that career mark in her upcoming seasons with the Savages.

The Savages had three players knock in multiple runs on the day. Josephine Moore plated four runners, while Goodwin and Macy Fisch had two RBIs apiece.

Goodwin, Ava Fisch, Rain Barthelman and Reanah Utterback also tallied a stolen base on the day.

The Savages kick off their season with three straight wins, and will look to continue the momentum when they visit the Tri-County Trojans on May 30.
