Sigourney Dominates 1A Sectional

NEW SHARON – Sigourney had two of the top three golfers at Prairie Knolls in New Sharon to capture the Class 1A sectional golf meet. The victory sends the team to the state qualifier on Thursday at Iowa City.

Josh Mohr fired an 83 to take top honors over Moravia’s Kaleb Templeton, who finished with an 85. Cade Striegle also fired an 85 to take third. Rounding out the top five were Kaden Whitlow of Moravia and Nash Smith of North Mahaska, both with 88s.

North Mahaska, who hosted the sectional, had its worst round of the year, finishing third behind Sigourney (354) and Moravia (363). Lynnville-Sully was fourth with 371 followed by Martensdale-St. Mary’s with 381 and Southeast Warren with 398.

Following Mohr and Striegel was Clay Morse with a 92 and Brock Halleran with 94. Bo Schmidt and Levi Crawford played but scores were not included in the final total. The entire team advances to the district meet at Pleasant Valley in Iowa City Thursday beginning at 9 a.m.

Smith led North Mahaska along with Blake Readshaw with a 92, Jaydyn Steil with a 93 and Brock Walkup with a 94. Dodge Duke and Ethan Fogle also played but did not figure into the scoring.

Three individuals advanced along with the teams from Sigourney and Moravia. Smith with an 80, Lynnville-Sully’s Maxwell Mintle and Jack Franey of Martensdale-St. Marys each shot 90.
