SIGOURNEY – Sigourney's community compost site located at the east end of Washington Street closed
on Nov. 15, 2020. The site is for the disposal of yard waste only and is usually open from late spring to late
fall each year. However, the Washington Street site will no longer be used due to the water treatment plant
project improvements that are currently underway.
Sigourney has been working to identify a new, suitable site for a temporary compost site within the City.
Sigourney Director of Public Works I, Don Northup, stated that the City owned 14 acres located west of the
water treatment plant would be an option as a temporary compost site. He went on to say that the access
road to the site would need gravel to make it viable as an entrance. The use of the land as a compost site
would require approval from the DNR. All City Council Members were present at the meeting and
unanimously voted to have the City pursue the DNR for approval of the proposed compost site.
