High school wrestling kicked into full gear recently and the area boys and girls squads have been able to see some pre Christmas break action.
Sigourney-Keota Trifecta
On Thursday, November 30 the Sigourney-Keota boys team picked up three victories to start the season off with a bang. They defeated Baxter 42-36, Cardinal 48-30 and Motezuma 39-24.
Freshman Rex Flynn had a solid night picking up a pair of victories against Baxter and Montezuma.
Against Cardinal, seniors Jake Moore and Hunter Siren - along with junior John Wheeldon and sophomore Owen Menke, picked up victories by pin. As did juniors Brady Clark and Ashton Schwab.
Moore and Clark also earned pins against Montezuma. Sophomore Jacob Libe earned a 13-10 decision against Montezuma as well.
Sigourney-Keota and English Valleys Cross Paths at Willard Howell Invitational
In a field of eleven teams, on Saturday, December 2, Sigourney-Keota finished in fourth place of the Willard Howell Invitational with 89 points.
Jake Moore brought home a second place finish in the 165 pound division. Joining him with third place finishes was Brady Clark (138), Ashton Schwab (157) and Hunter Sieren (175).
Senior Carter Wyatt, Owen Menke, Jacob Libe and freshman Jack Griener all finished fourth in their respective weight classes.
English Valleys senior Cody Breese had a solid performance in the 157 pound division finishing in second place. His sophomore teammate Cael Grove finished in third place of the 106 pound division.
Pekin Panthers Compete In Ottumwa Quad
The Panthers traveled to Ottumwa on Tuesday, November 28 for a quad event. Low numbers hurt in their three losses on the night.
However some positives came out of this event with sophomore Reed Lauderman earning two pins, one by pin the other a 3-2 decision.
Fellow sophomore Zachary Daug earned a pin against Ottumwa meanwhile junior Gannon Greiner also had a pin.
Utterback Dominating Early for Sigourney-Keota
Reanah Utterback has begun the season in dominant fashion. The Sigourney-Keota junior finished in first place of the Central Warriors girls Tournament on December 3.
For the day she finished with three technical falls and a 4-3 decision. Most impressive was the 17-0 technical fall in the finals.
Utterback also picked up first place finishes in the Dan Gable Donnybrook and the Second Annual Willard Howell Invitational.
Over the two tournaments she had seven pins.
Utterback’s senior teammate Lana Thomas earned a 6-5 decision victory in the Central Warrior Tournament and had one win at the Howell Girls Invitational.
Pekin and English Valley-Tri County Girls In Action
Pekin sophomores Lila Miller and Hailey Pedrick had outstanding performances during the Belle Plaine Invitational on December 3.
Miller finished in first place of the 140 division while Pedrick came away with a second place finish at 135 pounds.
