Goodwin Guides Savages Past Bears with 18Ks and a Two-Run Dinger

BROOKLYN—On June 7, the Sigourney Savages visited the BGM Bears for a SICL Conference matchup. The Savages stormed past the Bears by a final score of 9-0.

Senior Carly Goodwin displayed her dominance once again with seven innings pitched, no earned runs on three hits and 18 strikeouts. Goodwin also added a two-run homer in the top of the second. This was Goodwin’s first home run of the season.

The Savages red-hot offense started things early with nine runs in the first three innings. Seniors Carly Goodwin and Ava Fineran led the charge with two RBIs apiece. 

Erin Dawson and Addy Fineran also tallied an RBI for the Sigourney offense. 

The Savages were fresh off beating the Cardinal Comets, who were ranked #10 in Class 2A. Sigoureny Head Coach Shelly Streigle spoke on the momentum her teams has gained with, “The main thing I saw was that they never gave up. They were always doing their best at all times. Attacking good pitches, playing good defense and just believing in themselves.”

One of the biggest points of emphasis heading into the season was making the most of your moment because they don’t come around often. Coach Streigle wanted her players to never be scared of the moment, but instead be ready for it. When asked if she has seen that from her players so far, Coach Streigle responded with, “Oh yeah! Addy Finneran and Ava Fineran both had big hits against Cardinal. We had different ones tonight. Ella Bruns and Ava Fisch have had some big hits for us. They have been stepping up, and having Carly’s back every second.”

The Savages push to 9-4 on the season with a conference record of 7-1. They will host HLV/Tri-County on June 10, and the winner will have sole possession of first place in the SICL Conference.
