Basketball Briefs Jan 20-25

Boys basketball:
Pekin 72, EBF 53
After trailing by just one point at the end of the first quarter a 23-point second quarter helped propel the Panthers to a non-conference victory on Jan. 20.
The Panthers outscored the Rockets 46-18 in the second and third quarters to help them gain the victory and stay a game ahead of .500.
Nolan Glick was able to score 21 points. Cole Millikin finished with 16 points. Will Adam and Henry Adam both scored eight points each. Alijah Brock added seven points. Riley Smith finished with six points. Kasey Davis added four points and Mason Dahlstrom added two points.
Pekin 67, Louisa-Muscatine 45
The Panthers would lead wire-to-wire on Jan 21. In the first quarter the Panthers were able to score 17 points leading the Falcons by five.
By halftime the lead for the Panthers had swelled to 11 points. The Panthers never let Louisa-Muscatine get too comfortable as they surged to a 67-45 victory.
Pekin 61, Lone Tree 50
Before they were able to grab their 10th win of the season the Panthers had to battle back from a bit of adversity.
In their Friday game against Lone Tree the Panthers trailed 16-11 after the first quarter. By halftime the Lions had kept a five point lead over Pekin.
Pekin was able to surge to a 23-point third quarter which gave them an 11-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Although Lone Tree scored one more point than Pekin in the final frame the Panthers were able to grab a 10-point win. It is also the 10th win of the season for the Panthers.
Overall Pekin stands at 10-6.
Iowa Valley 77, English Valleys 53
The Bears showcased their offense, but it wasn’t quite enough on Jan. 21 against Iowa Valley.
The Tigers started the game seeming to want to maul the Bears. In the first half the Tigers scored 45 points while holding English Valleys to 27 points.
English Valleys would score 26 points in the second half of the game, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap that the Tigers had created.
Christian Tripses finished the game with 20 points to lead the Bears. Everett Bender added 13 points. Kane Axmear added 11 points. Ben Axmear finished with five points and Colton Mikesell added another two points.
English Valleys 61, Belle Plaine 53
After battling them to the end in their first meeting the Bears were able to get a little bit of revenge on Friday night.
The Bears woke up from an early deficit to down Belle Plaine by eight points.
After trailing by 10 the Bears started to dig themselves out of the early deficit. Although they trailed by 11 at the end of the first half.
Throughout the second half the Bears were able to wake up on both offense and defense. In the third quarter they scored 16 points and held the Plainsmen to just 10.
The final quarter featured English Valleys scoring 21 points and holding Belle Plaine to eight points.
With that the Bears were able to win their third game of the season. They stand at 3-14 overall on the year.
Girls basketball:
English Valleys 55, Iowa Valley 38
A slow start to the game was remedied in the second quarter.
During the start of the Jan. 21 game English Valleys only scored eight points in the first quarter. They added 18 in the second quarter to take the lead. From there the Bears were able to outscore the Tigers 29-21 in the second half to grab the eventual victory.
Anna Luers led the scoring effort for the Bears with 15 points. She also had a double-double with 13 rebounds. Aubrey Achenbach scored 15 points as well.
Ava Gehrking finished with 14 points. Addison Achenbach added seven points. Kailor Lown finished with two points scored.
English Valleys 44, Belle Plaine 19
The first time the two schools met English Valleys set a new school record. It appeared the Bears were on the same track on Friday night.
On the road against Belle Plaine the defense of the Bears came out determined to stifle Belle Plaine. Throughout the first half the Bears allowed just six points scored against them. The Bears held a comfortable 24-6 lead at halftime.
The scoring for the Bears slowed down slightly in the second half as they only scored 20 points. The defense stayed sharp as they only allowed 13 points scored against them.
Ava Gehrking led the Bears with 12 points in the win. Anna Luers and Addison Achenbach both added 10 points each. Aubrey Achenbach added another nine points. Mallory Koehn finished with three points.
With the win the Bears move to 9-6 overall on the season.
Louisa-Muscatine 49, Pekin 37
A first half lead wasn’t quite good enough.
The Lady Panthers came out shooting the ball well on Jan. 21 on the road against Louisa-Muscatine. In the first quarter the Lady Panthers scored 15 points. They added another 18 points in the second quarter to build a quite comfortable 33-20 lead at halftime.
Then the shots completely disappeared. Louisa-Muscatine would hold Pekin to just four points in the second half. Meanwhile the Falcons were able to complete the comeback with a 29-point half to gain the victory.
Renae Eubanks led the scoring effort with 12 points. Abby Guise added seven points. Maddy Petrehn and Anna Hadley finished with six points each. Ezra Parsons also added six points.
Lone Tree 62, Pekin 26
The scoring efforts of Pekin seemed to stay away from them as they closed out the week.
In a Jan. 24 game against Lone Tree the Lady Panthers were only able to score 26 points. Lone Tree surged to 62 points gaining the victory.
Abby Guise led the Lady Panthers with 11 points scored. She also added eight rebounds. Maddy Petrehn finished the game with five points. Renae Eubanks and Paislee Coleman both finished with three points each. Charlie Gambell and Peyten Coleman would finish the game with two points each.
Pekin stands at 6-9 overall this season.
