Bruns Brings the Runs, Molyenux Makes Them Miss as Savages Secure The District 12 Championship
SIGOURNEY—On June 13, the #8 ranked Sigourney Savages hosted the BGM Bears for the District 12 Championship. The Savages stormed past the Bears by a final score of 6-1.
The Sigourney offense struggled through the first run through the order, as Jake Moore was the only batter that found his way on base.
The second time around was completely different. Junior Cole McKay started the scoring with an RBI single. The Savages then added one more via a bases loaded walk. Junior Issac Bruns stepped into the batter's box with the bases loaded, and his eyes focused on runs. He belted a ball into deep centerfield that was played poorly by the BGM defender. The ball rolled to the wall as all three runners scored, and Bruns safely walked to second base.
When asked about what was running through his mind as he stepped into the box, Bruns responded with, “My confidence was high knowing I am going to get a barrel on the ball. I sat on a curveball there, and it worked out.”
Senior Reid Molyneux got the start for the Savages, and spoke on the effect that had on his pitching with, “Just means I can go up there and be more comfortable since the game is not as close. Just relax a little bit more. I just have to focus on my job because the batting is coming along on the other side. So, if I just keep doing my thing, it’ll work out.”
Molyneux was lights out from the mound, as he finished with five and one-thirds innings pitched, one earned run on three hits, four walks and nine strikeouts.
Sigourney Head Coach described the performance from Molyneux with, “Heck of a performance from Reid Molyneux. We were leaning on him to get 65 pitches tonight. He just dominated the game pitching wise. He took over and didn’t give them a thing. He opened things up for us.”
The Savages added one more run via a Caden Clarahan sac-fly, and pushed to a District 12 Championship by a final score of 6-1.
Coach Crawford described the beautiful feeling of winning the district title as, “It all comes to fruition when you are out there talking to them. They have put so much work into it. We have been talking about this for two weeks now. I almost felt like we were talking about Burlington Notre Dame too early. Now we need to start talking about it. We had moments this year, where as coaches, we told ourselves, ‘Do we even know how good we are?’ You start looking at some of that stuff, and you really look at how good we are. I am super proud of them. Being a district champ is something we have always been working for. I think that is our seventh or eighth district final, and we finally broke through.”
The senior captains, Jake Moore and Reid Molyneux, were asked not only winning the District title, but to do it in front of their home crowd for their final home game.
Moore first responded with, “It is pretty cool to host a district championship, and even cooler to win it. I think we came in here not overlooking BGM. We had beaten them once before, but we didn’t take that game into consideration. We knew we had to come and play.”
Molyneux shared his sentiment with, “You see everyone piling in here. It is fun to compete and have all these people cheering for you.”
The Savages advance to the Sub-State 6 Championship, and will face the #2 ranked Burlington Notre Dame Nikes on July 16 at Fairfield Middle School.
