Cobras Throttle Colfax-Mingo, 62-26
COLFAX—The Sigourney-Keota Cobras moved one step closer to a fifth straight unanimous District Championship last Friday, October 11 when they throttled Colfax-Mingo, 62-26.
“We did what we were supposed to do Friday night,” said Cobra head coach Jared Jensen. “We gave up a little more than we wanted, but we’re getting into the right mindset as we get closer to the postseason.”
It didn’t take Sigourney-Keota long to establish their dominance as the first play from scrimmage was a 71 yard touchdown run for senior Isaac Bruns.
The run pushed Bruns to the 1,000 yard rushing mark for the season.
“We’re happy for Isaac to reach that bench mark,” Jensen said. “He’d be the first to tell you that he couldn’t have done it without his offensive linemen.”
Colfax-Mingo found some success during their first drive but came up short. The stop for Sigourney-Keota came in exciting fashion after they blocked the Tigerhawks field goal attempt.
Sophomore Landon Conrad scooped up the ball after the block and returned it untouched joined by a convoy of teammates.
The scoring onslaught continued through the first half until Sigourney-Keota was leading 49-12 at the break.
Bruns finished the game with 164 rushing yards on six carries with four touchdowns. He also hauled in four passes for 28 receiving yards.
Senior Brady Clark, junior Jacob Libe and sophomores Chase Clarahan and Carson O’Rourke all finished with over 25 rushing yards.
As a team Sigourney-Keota finished with 383 rushing yards.
Junior Braydon Wood ran the ball three times for 54 yards with a touchdown to go along with his four completed passes for 94 yards with a touchdown.
Wood’s leading receivers were senior Brody Griener with 34 yards and Brady Clark of his own.
This Friday Sigourney-Keota hosts Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (2-5) and despite their record and struggles, Coach Jensen expects a tough contest to end the regular season.
“They are always a physical team, so we expect a lot of physicality,” Jensen said. “They are a young team building towards the future. We need to make sure we’re focused and finish the regular season strong.”
