Dolores “Dodie” Leer passed away on Monday, Feb. 28, at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney, Iowa. Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 12, from 4 to 7p.m. at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in What Cheer. Interment will be held privately on the Leer farm. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Tri-County Dollars for Scholars. Holland-Coble Funeral Home of What Cheer is in charge of arrangements.
Dolores (Dodie) Leer, 82 of Keswick passed away Feb. 28 at the Keokuk County Hospital. Dodie was born on Aug. 16, 1939 to LeRoy and Juanita Dugger. She was raised on the family farm north of What Cheer. After graduating from Tri-County Community Schools in 1957, she attended American Institute of Business and received a certificate of completion.
Dodie was united in marriage to James (Jim) Leer on Nov. 5, 1960 at the Dugger family farm near What Cheer. To this union, 3 children were born: LeRoy (Amy) Leer of What Cheer, Deb Hart of Cheyenne, Wyoming and Nita (Philip) Brumbaugh of Keswick.
Dodie and Jim moved to the Leer family farm in 1968. Dodie farmed over 300 acres while Jim was digging ditches or flying helicopters. During the winter months, Dodie helped mix chemicals for her husband’s helicopter in the morning and worked in the cornfields in the afternoon for Holden’s Foundation Seed Company. She also ran a detasseling crew with local kids for Holden’s. Dodie also worked for Montezuma Manufacturing for 19 years.
Dodie was a 4-H and Cub Scout leader. She made sure every kid had a ride to the meetings. Dodie hauled her cattle and horses to shows as well as the county fair. She loved horses and always enjoyed raising colts. Dodie was an avid reader and shared books with others. She was a member of the Keswick United Methodist Church and Martha Circle. Dodie was a loving, kind, and generous grandmother. She was especially proud of her grandchildren whom she thought were perfect.
Dodie is survived by her husband, children and 8 grandchildren; Daniel (Alina) Kingsley of Golden, Colorado, Colt (Samantha) Brumbaugh of Keswick, Andrea Hart of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Kacy (Tony) Heinrichs of Cedar Rapids, Mikayla Hart of Fort Collins, Colorado, Cassidy (Adam) Martin of What Cheer, Jake (Lexie) Brumbaugh of Ankeny, and Dustin Hart of Cheyenne, Wyoming; two great-grandchildren, Braxton and Brailey Brumbaugh and one more great-grandchild on the way.
Dodie is preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Larry Dugger, Marlene (Skip) Dugger, and Dean Dugger.
