Dolores Newcomb

1932-2021

Dolores Newcomb, 88, of North Liberty, formerly of What Cheer, died at home on Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2021. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 27 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in What Cheer. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Friday morning and last until the time of service. Burial will be in the McFarlan Cemetery at What Cheer. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the What Cheer Library.

Mary Dolores Newcomb was born Nov. 3, 1932 to James Lacy and Sylvia Myrtle Farmer Coy Hayes in Hayesville.  She attended school in the early years at Hayesville Elementary School and graduated from Sigourney High School in 1950.  Dolores was united in marriage to David E. Newcomb on June 9, 1950.  Two children were born to this union.

Dolores worked at Graham’s Department Store in Sigourney, at the Keokuk County Hospital, for Dr. Lee McClenathan, the University of Iowa and the United States Postal Service.  She retired from the U.S.P.S. in March 1996 after 32 years of service.  In retirement she stayed busy gardening and volunteering at the What Cheer Library and working part-time at “Teet and Tobe’s” in Keswick. 

She was a member of the What Cheer United Methodist Church and Mary Circle until she moved from What Cheer.

Dolores is survived by her son, James and wife Debra of North Liberty; four grandchildren: Todd (Stephanie) Newcomb of Douds, Angela (Dan) Peek of Washington, Julie (Mike Syroki) of Warren, Michigan and Brian (Christy) Newcomb of Batavia.  Seventeen great grandchildren: Bryce, Alivia and Natalie Newcomb, Claudia Woodsmall, Logan, Addison and Brooke Yoder, Brenton Giberson, Maddyx Peek, MacKenzie, Michael, Jack and Kaitlyn Syrocki, Ava, Eli, Cayden and Kennadi Newcomb. She also leaves behind seven nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 59 years, David E. Newcomb, and a son, David Michael Newcomb.
