Experience, Depth Key for NM Boys Hoops
NEW SHARON – North Mahaska enters the 2020-21 boys’ basketball campaign with plenty of hope based on experience and a deep bench. The Warhawks return 13 letterwinners including five seniors from last year’s 12-10 team. Those facts bring a smile to coach Seth Streebin’s face as he begins his seventh season at the helm.
“We have a very good team with a ton of depth,” said Streebin. “We are going to be very tough to beat every single night.”
North Mahaska returns the top six scorers including four who topped 00 points on the season. Sophomore Braden Steel, who found plenty of floor time last season led the team in scoring with 225 points and rebounds with 167. Addy Bollman, who has signed to play at William Penn, returns for his senior season. He scored 209 points and was second on the team in blocks with nine.
Sophomore Nash Smith led the team in blocks a year ago with 12 and led the team at the free throw line at 78 percent. Senior assist leaders Dylan Klinker (75) and Blake Readshaw (69) will be running the NM offense. The duo also led the team in steals with Readshaw collecting 48 and Klinker with 37. Steel was close behind with 36.
Other major contributors will be seniors Ty Kelderman and Matthew Goemaat; juniors Sean Knockel, Sam Terpstra and Chase Grandia; sophomore Lane Harmon and newcomer Brady Sterling.
Streebin feels this team could compete for an upper division slot in the South Iowa Cedar League.
“Going to be a tough conference once again,” said Streebin. “Monte is the team to beat in the conference, but I feel like we are right there with them. Would love to finish top two or three in the conference. Very doable.”
They will get the chance to see how they stand when they host Montezuma in the season opener on Tuesday, Dec. 1.
