KEOTA—On February 6, the Keota Eagles hosted the Sigourney Savages for a matchup of familiar foes in the SICL conference. The Savages secured their 10th straight win by a final score of 60-18.

Senior guard for the Sigourney Savages Carly Goodwin came into the game one point shy of the 1,000 point career mark. It did not take long for Goodwin to score that point, as she sank a deep triple in the first quarter. She joins Carolyn Holm, Sierra Davis, Autumn Barthelman, Megan Stuhr, and Kaylee Weber as the only girls in 5 on 5 Sigourney history to accomplish this feat. The 1,000-point mark runs in the blood as well, as both her father and mother hit the mark in their high school career.

Goodwin spoke on being able to get that record secured early in the game with, “I know I was close last night, so I just came in today and played my game, not try to force it. It felt good with it being the first shot, so I could relax and play my game the rest of the time.”

Sigounery Head Coach, and mother to Goodwin, Schay Moore described the emotions of Goodwin getting the accolade with, “Obviously it was really awesome. I think she is just the sixth girl to accomplish the 1,000 point career mark since girls’ basketball switched to five players, so it is a really special accomplishment. Then with being her mom, it makes it even more special to be a part of it.”

The Savages stormed out to a 17-9 lead by the conclusion of the first quarter, and continued the momentum into the second. The Eagles were held scoreless in the quarter, and the Savage pressed their lead to 32-9. Sigourney juniors Josephine Moore led the charge with 10 points, while senior Carly Goodwin tallied eight of her own.

The second half was more dominance from the Savages, as they out-scored the Eagles 28-9 en route to the 60-18 victory. Moore finished her night with a double double that consisted of 24 points and 10 rebounds, which were both team highs. Senior Carly Goodwin filled out the stat sheet with nine points, five rebounds, six assists, three steals and a block.

The Savages continue their red hot streak, and push their win streak to 10 straight games. Senior captain Goodwin spoke on the win streak with, “My mom (Coach Moore) sat us seniors down, and told us that this is in our hands. You guys can control and win all the games after Christmas break. I think we all came together, and decided we want to do this. It has been so awesome to be a part of it.”

Coach Moore spoke on the win streak with, “I talked to the girls after the game, and told them I couldn’t be prouder. I don’t think any other team could’ve done it. We were dealt a lot of blows with coming back from break, and then having two weeks off with only four days of practice. For them to mentally get big wins against conference teams, and some tough non-conference teams. I couldn’t be more proud of them. I think this was the first time in four years we have hit the 17 game win mark.” Coach Moore was in fact correct, as the Savages secured their first 17 game win season since the 2020-2021 season where they finished 18-6.

The Savages wrap up their regular season with a final record of 19-4. They sit atop the SICL-East division with a conference record of 11-4. They return for the first round of the IGHSAU playoff, where they will host the Pekin Panthers.

The Keota Eagles wrap up their season with a final record of 6-14 with a conference record of 4-10. They will return to action on February 8 for their first round matchup, as they head to North English to face a familiar foe in the English Valleys Bears.
