Harold Lee

1925-2021

Harold Lee, 96, of Webster, passed peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus on Nov. 2, 2021, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City. No services are planned.

Harold David Lee was born Oct. 25, 1925, in Sigourney, the son of Benjamin and Myrtle (May) Lee. He graduated from Kinross High School. Sometime later, he was drafted into the US Army and served two years in Kyoto, Japan, as a waiter in the officers’ mess hall. When he returned from Japan, he married Evelyn Hubbs on June 27, 1948, in Sigourney. Together, they raised their family and farmed near Webster. Harold didn’t farm to make a living; he lived to farm. Later in life, he experimented with different types of agriculture, including growing fruit trees, raising ostriches, raising Koi fish, and winemaking. He planted walnut trees and two chestnut trees which were his pride and joy. Recently, Harold accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was proud that no one could guess his age and his mind was sharp even to the end. Harold was a kind soul, he never raised his voice, was softspoken, put others before himself, and was a peacemaker. He was found smiling much more often the last few months of his life, and during his recent stay at Mercy Hospital, the nurses appreciated how kind he was to each of them. In the last six years, as Harold aged, daughter Marychristy became his full-time caregiver.

He is survived by his children, Larry (Susan) Lee of South English, Marychristy Lee Fuller of Kalona, Barry Lee (Karla) of Sigourney, daughter-in-law Tracey Lee of Webster, nine grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Evelyn, his son, Terry, his daughter, Melody, three brothers, two sisters, and one granddaughter.

Special thanks to Dr. James Schlichtmann of WCHC for his exceptional care and friendship, the Mercy Hospital nursing staff, Rory Ditzler, the Mercy Hospital patient advocate, Pastor Conrad and Heidi Hertzler for their pastoral care, the Mercy Hospital chaplains, especially Reverend Terry Ball, and Sam and Serena Schwartz who were Harold’s good friends and neighbors.
