James Terry Palmer

1936 - 2022

James Terry Palmer was born March 12, 1936 near Keota, Iowa, the son of Omer Daniel "Jim" and Leona Mildred Deimerly Palmer.  He graduated from Keota High School and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at Iowa State University.  He worked and later owned Quad County Veterinary Clinic in Wellman from 1960-2017.  Terry was united in marriage to Janet Karen Ross on December 25, 1957 at the West Chester Methodist Church.  To this union they were blessed with three children.  They later divorced.  Terry later married Ruth Allene Sterling on August 14, 1971 at Sigourney, Iowa.  He enjoyed working with animals and their owners, raising cattle, farming with his two sons and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State Cyclones.  He was a member of the Asbury Methodist Church in Wellman, retired member on the Board of Directors for the Wellman Telephone Company, a member of the Wellman Rotary Club and a member of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association.  Terry passed away on Friday, July 15 2022 from complications from congestive heart failure at Parkview Manor in Wellman at the age of 86 years.

Terry is survived by his wife Ruth, two sons, John (Becky) Palmer of Keota and James (Donna) Palmer of Wellman; a daughter Catherine (Alan) Wertjes of Olympia, WA; seven grandchildren, Katie (fiance' Austin Reuman) Palmer, Shelly (Tyler Laing) Palmer, Lindsey (Cody) Graber, Ross (Britt) Wertjes, Will Wertjes, Nate (fiance' Gloria Kim) Wertjes and Olivia Wertjes and two sisters, Mary Lou Crossett of Fountain Valley, California and Brenda (Bob) Gluth of Highland, Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Jerry Crossett and nephew Derek Gluth.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 21, 2022 at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman from 4 to 7 p.m.  A private family burial will be on Friday. A celebration of life memorial service will be at 11 a.m on Saturday, August 27, at the Asbury Methodist Church in Wellman.  A memorial fund has been established for the Asbury Methodist Church or Washington County Hospice.  Messages and tributes may be directed to www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
