KEOTA—On January 5, the Keota Eagles hosted the Colfax-Mingo Tigerhawks for a SICL matchup. The Eagles stormed past the Tigerhawks by a final score of 70-44. The highlight of the night came in the third quarter, when senior Sawyer Stout drove to the basket with two points on his mind. He sank the layup, and officially hit the 1,000 points mark for his career as a Keota Eagle.

Coming into the game, Stout needed 16 points to hit the mark. By halftime, Stout had tallied nine points, and only needed seven more.

After a triple and making two free throws, Stout was one point away from history. He made a quick dribble move to his left, and drove the lane. He found a crease in the Tigerhawk’s defense, and slipped in for two.

After the game, Sawyer Stout spoke on the accomplishment with, “Man it felt so good! I made it look tough, but it felt so good. It has been such a long journey, and it’s thanks to all my teammates, my dad as the coach, and everyone who supported me.”

It was tough night shooting for Stout, as he only made one three point shot on the night. He spoke of the mentality he had to keep shooting with, “It is easy to stay positive, when you are up 30 points. I just wanted to see everyone else score, and knew my baskets would come.”

Stout spoke of the chemistry between this team as, “We play so well together. All of us have been playing together since second grade. We’ve all grown up together playing ball, and this is everyone's favorite sport around here.

Lastly, Stout described his celebratory plans as, “I get one night to celebrate, then I am right back in this gym.”

Keota Head Coach, and father to Sawyer, Dan Stout spoke on the accomplishment from his son with, “Another awesome accomplishment for a high school kid to be able to hit 1,000 points. You could tell it was weighing on him. You don’t see him miss many layups. The work ethic he has put in, this is something he deserves. I also told everyone that he isn’t able to accomplish something like this without his teammates. We look at it as a team and program accomplishment, as well as an individual one.”

The Eagles stay undefeated, as they push to 11-0 on the season. They will return to action on December 9, when they visit the North Mahaska Warhawks.
